On this episode of "Crime & Trauma Report," David and Christian profile the mind of the cult leader Marshall Applewhite, of HEAVENS GATE, who led all his followers to suicide.
HEAVEN'S GATE CULT
Heaven's Gate was an American cult based near San Diego, California. It was founded in 1974 and led by Marshall Applewhite (1931–1997) and his best friend, Bonnie Nettles (1927–1985). They called themselves “Ti” and Do.”
Applewhite, “Do,” took over the cult after Nettles, “Ti,” died in 1985. Their relationship was close but platonic. Applewhite taught his followers that a better life lay ahead for them, one free of the problems on life on earth if they would only shed their “human flesh vehicles.” He claimed to have evolved from an “evolutionary level above human” and his goal was to leave earth and relocate with other similarly evolved souls to another part of the universe.
On March 26, 1997, police discovered the bodies of 39 members of the group in a house in the California suburb of Rancho Santa Fe. They had participated in a mass suicide in order to reach what they believed was an extraterrestrial spacecraft which followed the Hale-Bopp comet and led to their ultimate cosmic destination.
